Breast & Cervical Cancer Program Coordinator
At the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Chandra Zambruno serves as the Breast & Cervical Cancer Program Coordinator. Her journey as an advocate for Community Health Workers (CHWs) is deeply rooted in her extensive experience in social determinants of health, social work, and behavioral health. Through her prior roles, Chandra worked closely with CHWs, witnessing firsthand the profound value they bring to individuals and communities.
“I worked on a team with CHWs for several years and know their work to be incredibly valuable,” Chandra shares. “Their unique connection to the populations they serve makes them an asset to any healthcare team.”
What It Means to Be an Ally
For Chandra, being a CHW Ally means advocating for the pivotal role CHWs play in communities and healthcare settings. “CHWs bring so much to the community and teams they are a part of,” she explains. “They know their populations really well and have connections that other roles do not. It’s important to advocate for the importance of their work and share how it helps improve outcomes.”
By lifting up the voices and contributions of CHWs, allies like Chandra play an essential part in ensuring that this workforce receives the recognition and support they deserve.

“Studies show the value of CHW work, and the cost-to-benefit analysis consistently highlights their impact,” Chandra says. Data can help organizations recognize the value CHWs can bring to their work.
- Spread CHW Awareness and Education
Raising awareness about the critical role CHWs play and sharing data-driven insights can build broader understanding and support. “It’s important to learn why CHWs are important and how their time can be effectively supported,” Chandra notes.
- Look for Ways to Integrate CHWs into Your Work
By looking for ways to integrate CHWs into their work, organizations can ensure sustainable impact.“At DHHS, we collaborate regularly with other CHW advocates and external partners to look for opportunities to increase the sustainability of CHW work in New Hampshire,” Chandra adds.
Promoting CHWs Within Her Organization
As a program coordinator, Chandra and her team actively promote CHWs by supporting their work through program funding. They also support clinic partners in exploring ways to integrate and expand CHW support in their practices.
A Message for the Community
When asked to share one message with the broader community about CHWs, Chandra’s response is clear:
“Read stories, ask about what CHWs do, and learn how important the role is. Building community is needed more than ever, and CHWs are a valuable bridge to reach people where they are.”
